Before venturing fully into public service, Ikoedem Ekong built an impressive career in the private sector, where he earned a reputation for innovation, strategic leadership, and ethical management. He began his professional journey at Civic Technologies Ltd., a Lagos-based tech firm, where his sharp intellect and administrative acumen quickly earned him a series of promotions. He eventually rose to become the Executive Director of Strategy and Corporate Affairs, overseeing policy, partnerships, and public engagement at a time when the Nigerian tech ecosystem was still finding its footing.
In 2000, John was appointed Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of GridCom Solutions, one of Nigeria’s early broadband and wireless infrastructure providers. Under his leadership, GridCom pioneered bold solutions in digital access, expanded connectivity to underserved regions, and helped lay the groundwork for Nigeria’s eventual telecom revolution. His work at GridCom earned him national recognition as a forward-thinking executive and a catalyst for innovation.
He was also elected as Public Relations Officer of the National Association of ICT Providers, where he played a key advocacy role, pushing for better regulatory frameworks and investment in local tech talent. These roles not only broadened his experience but deepened his passion for systems that empower ordinary Nigerians through access, technology, and opportunity. re he has since continued to be a voice for justice, progress, and the power of people-led governance.
